BSI Recognized for Excellence in Environmental Education
Boston, MA (April 30, 2010) -

The Boston Schoolyard Initiative, and in particular the work of BSI staff Kristin Metz and Julie Stone, was recognized today by Massachusetts Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Ian Bowles for excellence in energy and environmental education. Julie and Kristin are instrumental in the creation of education-focused green spaces (outdoor classrooms) and effective education programs that have increased and improved environmental education opportunities for thousands of Boston Public Schools students. Julie and her team developed the concept of outdoor classrooms that are now available to teachers and students at 26 Boston Public Schools Elementary and K-8 schools. Kristin and her education program staff support teachers in using outdoor classrooms and the schoolyard to teach students about the natural world just outside the school door. Their programs motivate students, get them excited about science and writing and improve student achievement. Over 300 teachers at 50 schools have taken training from the BSI team, in turn reaching thousands of BPS elementary and K-8 students.
