Harvard-Kent Elementary School

50 Bunker Hill Street
Charlestown, Massachusetts 02129
  • Neighborhood: Charlestown
  • Project Type: Schoolyard with Outdoor Classroom
  • Year Completed: 2012
  • Landscape Architect: CBA Landscape Architects
About the Project:

Located at the base of Bunker Hill Street next to the Tobin Bridge in Charlestown, the Harvard-Kent recognizes the important relationship between wellness and academic success and is committed to providing a school environment that enhances learning and development of lifelong wellness practices. Opened in the fall of 1972, Harvard-Kent had no major improvements to the playground asphalt surface until the BSI renovation.  The new schoolyard creates a new, welcoming entrance to the school and incorporates a "U.S.S. Constitution" theme. The new outdoor classroom replaces what had been a rusty, dilapidated chain link fence and basketball court fallen into disrepair.  The school has one of the highest rates of students qualified for free or reduced lunch in the BPS system, and is positioned to be a resource for nearby public housing residents.
